2010 Honda CR-Z First Drive

  • 2010 Honda CR-Z Performance

  • 2010 Honda CR-Z Summary

After years of watching Toyota establish itself as a leader in hybrid vehicles, Honda finally went back to the drawing board to develop a vehicle that builds on two of the company’s most iconic vehicles in its history: the original fuel-efficient Honda Insight hybrid and the sporty Honda CRX. While it has yet to be seen whether or not Honda will be able to compete against Toyota for the hybrid sales crown, the new CR-Z is proof that saving gasoline doesn’t have to be boring as it attempts to balance fun with fuel economy and actually does a nice job of meeting somewhere in the middle. Although my time with the 2011 Honda CR-Z wasn’t as long as I could have hoped for, I walked away from the Honda’s sporty hybrid with the feeling that this new model could rival the Volkswagen Golf TDI by combining looks, fuel economy, price and, of course, driving enjoyment.

As an all-new model, the 2011 Honda CR-Z will likely appeal to a broad audience including new-car buyers in the hybrid, hot hatch and subcompact segments, but there are still some pros and cons that should be considered.

Pros –

  • Attractive and comfortable interior

  • Sporty feel on the road

  • Affordable price

Cons –

  • Mix of hybrid and sport could make it rather confusing on both fronts to consumers

  • No rear seats

  • Hatch design hampers rearward visibility
